"January Snow" is a metaphoric love story told in seasons. It opens with a vintage green coat and a quiet admission, you're bundled up, guarded, not ready to let anyone get too close. The relationship HAS to move like January snow, slow and unhurried, because that's the only pace you can trust. There's a push and pull running through the whole song, the warmth of someone patient enough to wait for you while bumping up against every instinct you have to disappear before it gets real. But slowly, without you quite deciding to, something thaws. By the end you're not hiding anymore. You let your guard down later than others, but now you can't wait to enjoy the season you're in together. The "forecast" (your energy) that started at "three degrees" ends with "spring in Tennessee". It's a song about disorganized attachment slowly, stubbornly, beautifully losing to the right person.
