In 1950, a junior senator held up a piece of paper and said it carried the names of communists working inside the United States government.

The room went quiet. Then the country went to work on him.

They made his name into a word. Open a dictionary: McCarthyism means smear, witch hunt, a man hunting enemies who were never there.

The enemies were there. The proof existed the night he spoke, sealed in a vault that would stay locked for fifty years, long after he was dead and the word had done its work.

This is the part the standard story leaves out: not whether the man was likable, but what a machine does when it cannot answer a charge and cannot afford to open the file.

Read the man, not the word.

It is so sad to witness the cost of going against a machine! So heroic to speak and give everything that you have to witness and testify because you are that hero! Well done good and faithful servant.

I've read 25 books by EKO since January. Of them, I consider "McCarthy" the best of all -- truly excellent. EKO's "McCarthy" reveals real proven truth that almost everyone else has denied and hidden for decades, completely restoring the reputation of a patriotic whistle-blower whose reputation has previously been tarred so universally as to make his name a universal pejorative. Using records unsealed after fifty years, and proof from decoded intercepts of messages to and from Russian spies, "McCarthy" proves McCarthyism was not a paranoid delusion, but rather politically-inconvenient truth. The work Senator McCarthy began, seeking to uncover betrayal of the public trust and actual treason, continues in our day. This book is a useful reminder not to let inconvenient truths be buried by deceptive editing, burying of evidence, and oft-repeated lies.

Quite an example of a story that needs reexamination. Eko does right by Joe echoing the mechanisms that have been employed for decades. Such a sad ending to his fight for transparency and justice. We can do so much better.
