Hundreds of women asked what they could do to help Black rootworkers, conjurers, witches, spiritualists, and practitioners as we seek justice from oppression, so I wrote twelve pages on how to do real justice work in the practice you already have, without appropriating a closed one.
What's inside
- Three petitions for justice. One for Nolan and the truth. One for the Black women already carrying this. One aimed at the structure of white supremacy itself
- An 8-day ritual guide. Repeatable, open to anyone, with a mandatory daily action step.
- Rules of engagement. 8 non-negotiables, including the ones nobody says out loud.
- Action steps. Where to donate, how to get involved in the local groundwork, etc
Who this is for
- You have a practice and you want to aim it at something that matters
- You have felt the pull toward Hoodoo and you want to understand why the answer is no, from someone whose family it belongs to
- You are willing to spend money, make calls, and be uncomfortable at your own dinner table
- You want to still be doing this ninety days from now
Who this is not for
- Anyone looking for the aesthetic of Hoodoo
- Anyone who needs to be told they're "one of the good ones"
- Anyone looking for absolution
About the author
I'm Chanel, writer, 4th-gen Hoodoo diviner, independent scholar and anti-racism educator. I've spent close to two decades studying under theologians and scholars. I'm an ordained minister so I can officiate for my LGBTQ+ family, but I don't preach or pastor. I'm also the mother of 2 teenage Black boys, that is the real reason this book exists.
FAQs
Is this Hoodoo?
Absolutely not. Every practice in this book is a general form that belongs to no one and everyone. The book explains this at length.
I'm not white. Is this for me?
Yes. It's written for non-Black practitioners. The ancestor chapter speaks most directly to white American readers, and the rest applies to anyone standing outside the practice of Hoodoo.
How should I use this book?
It's about a 20-30 minute read. It's designed to be read in one sitting, then used as a reference guide for eight days.
Can I share it?
Please do. My only ask is that you send the link to this page, not the file you download, that way I can track everything.
What will you do with my contact information?
I will use your email address to add you to my email community, which is the list of email subscribers who receive Pieces x Pages, my weekly newsletter. Your contact information will not be used in any other manner.
Decolonizing is spiritual work. It is also phone calls, money, unlearning, and a lot of hard truths. Are you ready to deepen your anti-racist journey?
